The 10 Best Foods To Eat:
The Desert Island Game

The object of this game is to choose the 10 best foods to eat if you are trapped on a desert island. Of course they will all be plant foods. You also need to explain why each food qualifies to be on the list. Read the rules of the game, then make your own list before you look at ours.

Rules of the game

You should consider all of these factors:
  • Some of the foods should be starchy foods with enough calories to satisfy hunger.

  • We need to get all essential nutrients.

  • The foods should be super healthy, since we won't have a doctor on the island.

  • There should be enough variety so we can make interesting meals.
Other facts to assume:
  1. We do have a way of cooking food.

  2. We have water.

  3. We have a lifetime supply of vitamin B12.

The 10 best foods to eat

Every time we play this game, our answers are a little different. This is our current version:
  • Kale
Since this is probably the most nutritious food on the planet, it is an easy choice. It is loaded with protein, calcium and healthy phytochemicals. It is a cruciferous vegetable to help protect us from cancer.

  • Broccoli
Another high protein, high calcium, cruciferous vegetable. You can never eat too many green vegetables.

  • Tomatoes
They will add flavor and interest to many of our other foods.  And they contain lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that protects DNA.

  • Onions
Another food that adds flavor, both raw and cooked. Plus they contain allicin, which has anti-tumor effects.

  • Sweet potatoes
Filling, sweet, and satisfying, with lots of carotenoid antioxidants. We would choose the dark orange ones or deep purple ones. We can eat them plain, or cook them with some of our other nine foods.

  • Black beans
We want to have some legumes, for variety and their unique nutrients. If we choose soybeans, we can make tofu and soy milk. But black beans have the highest level of antioxidants of any of the beans. They are also a great source of protein, soluble fiber, and other plant nutrients. And they taste great.

  • Red rice
Before we knew about red rice, we had brown rice on our list. Recent studies show the red rice has a higher antioxidant content than brown or black rice. It is high in insoluble fiber and will go well with our other foods. Red quinoa would be a good choice too.

  • Blueberries
Every time we see a list of the 10 best foods to eat, blueberries are on it. No wonder. They contain anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants that keep our blood flowing smoothly without clotting.

  • Oranges
We can combine the oranges or their juice with some of our other nine foods to make some yummy dishes. They contain vitamin C, flavonoids, and a carotenoid called beta-cryptoxanthin.

  • Walnuts
An ounce of walnuts every day will give us valuable omega 3 fats.

Cooking with our 10 best foods to eat

You don't have to be trapped on a desert island to eat these wonderful foods. We eat many of them every day. The next game is to think of a way to make a tasty meal using only the foods on this list. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Cook red rice with some orange juice for breakfast. Top with blueberries and walnuts.

  • Make a soup or stew with onions, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and kale.

  • Saute broccoli and kale with onions. Serve with red rice.

  • Cook black beans with onions and tomatoes. Serve over red rice or sweet potatoes.

  • Mash cooked sweet potatoes with orange segments. Top with walnuts.
We hope you enjoyed our desert island game. Let us know if you think you have created a better list.
