Calculate Your BMR and your
Recommended Calorie Intake

In general, the recommended calorie intake for young adults and men is about 2500 calories per day. For women, it is around 2000 calories per day. However, individual calorie requirements can vary quite a bit. If you are sedentary, you need fewer calories. Exercise heavily? You need more.

BMR Calculator

Follow our vegan weight loss plan and go for a walk every day. Your calorie intake per day should naturally be close to the right amount. But it is still interesting to know your daily calorie requirement. One key factor in our calorie needs is our basal metabolic rate, or BMR. That is the number of calories we burn at complete rest: not even digesting any food.

The BMR tells us the calories our body uses to run our vital organs. Because we eat and move around, the calories we actually burn will always be greater than our BMR.

To use the calculator:
  1. Select the English or metric system.

  2. Enter your gender, age, weight, height, and activity level. Ignore the box that says ENTER YOUR WEIGHT AND HEIGHT - you have already done that.

  3. Click the "Calculate" button at the bottom right.

The results box tells you:
  1. Your BMR

  2. Calories needed to maintain your current weight

  3. Recommended calories to lose one pound per week. If you are sedentary, this may be less than 1200 calories. Instead, to lose weight safely, you must take in at least 1200 calories and get some exercise. Here are some tips for getting started with a weight loss workout. You can begin with a short daily walk.
