Our Favorite
Vegan Cookbooks
For Weight Loss Recipes
There are a lot of vegan
cookbooks out there, but there are only a few that we
recommend for our weight loss program.
The best of the best

The
McDougall
Program for Maximum Weight Loss by John McDougall, MD and
Mary McDougall. This is the only book
that matches our vegan weight loss plan perfectly.
It is not just a cookbook. It actually contains more weight loss
information than recipes. But there are 106 simple
recipes in the
book, and every one (except for one cold cereal breakfast) has
a low calorie density.
If you cook only from this book, you can't go
wrong. The recipes are perfect for weight loss. However, adventurous
cooks may get bored with the MWL
book
before long.
Fortunately, at the back of the book,
there is a list of the low-calorie-density recipes found
in other
McDougall books. Look for inexpensive used copies of the older
McDougall books
on amazon.com. We also see them in thrift stores. Our favorites are:
- The
McDougall Health-Supporting Cookbook Volume II
- The
New McDougall Cookbook
- The
McDougall Quick & Easy Cookbook
All McDougall books are vegan, except for the occasional use of honey.
You can use agave nectar instead of honey.
For many more recipes that follow our plan, look through the recipes on
the Fat
Free Vegan
website.
More oil-free vegan cookbooks
The following cookbooks are good too, but they contain some
recipes for high calorie foods. Study this information
on the calorie content of foods carefully. You will see that
for weight loss,
you can eat many vegan foods in unlimited quantities.
You must omit or carefully limit other foods. Be sure you know
the difference.
See our review of the RAVE Diet book and Eating DVD. They are two of our favorites for recipes and motivation.

Fat Free and Easy by Jennifer Raymond. This is an
excellent
cookbook for people who are just getting started with a vegan diet. You
can find most of
the ingredients in the grocery store.
We have turned a lot of people on to this book, and everyone loves it.
The
recipes are delicious and easy to make. You will love her
soups and bean salads. More of her wonderful recipes are found in Dr.
Neal Barnard's books.

The
(Almost)
No Fat Cookbook by Joanne Stepaniak. There are many
creative ideas for meals in this book. You will find substitutions for
dairy and meat items. There are also recipes for oil-free salad
dressings and sauces.
If you like this book, the author also has an (Almost) No
Fat Holiday Cookbook.

The
Uncheese
Cookbook or The Ultimate
Uncheese Cookbook by Bryanna Clark Grogan.
If you miss eating cheese, these are the books for you. The Ultimate
book is newer but both books contain similar recipes.
Many of the recipes
contain nuts and seeds. A few recipes contain oil but most are
oil-free. The recipes are fun to use in small quantities or for
special occasions.

The
Health Promoting Cookbook by Alan Goldhamer, DC. is the
healthiest vegan cookbook we have ever seen. Even the first
few books we talked about sometimes use ingredients like salt,
sugar, or isolated soy protein.
The recipes in this book contain no oil, no salt, and no concentrated
sweeteners. They are also wheat-free for people who are
wheat-sensitive.
If you have serious health problems, you may need to go to this extreme
to become well.
When you begin to prepare low calorie density foods without oil, the
food may taste bland to you. Don't be discouraged. Your tastes will
change. Eventually you will learn to love the natural flavors of whole
plant foods.
